I would like to bring to your attention a potential improvement in SSIS. When we need to pass parameter value from parent package to child package, we mostly use “Parent package variable” configuration type in child package. But when we need to read multiple values from parent package, we need to create multiple “Parent package variable” configuration type in child package.
There are few work-arounds in order to pass multiple parameter values from parent package to child package without creating multiple “Parent package variable” configurations in child package. But we do need a good method of implementing this requirement. So we can better concentrate on development of business solutions rather than work-arounds.
I have posted a suggestion to Microsoft regarding this. Kindly have a look at it and support it if you believe its worth.

Developing charts for an organization for getting to know “how it’s team or organization is doing?” has been always a key requirement for managers or top-heads in organizations. But for developer it’s merely a representation of values in pretty charts. But every developer has to bear in mind that it’s always bonded with business meanings.
And moreover, the representation could give different perspectives to different people. So, setting-up proper colors, combining with different types of charts (bar-chart & line-chart) may be at-times important for people in organizations to make decisions.

“SparkLines” is a new feature introduced in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2.
Fast Facts about SparkLines:
• It is the simplest way to make your data/values intelligent by showing them in visual way.
• Because it’s a tiny-chart representation, makes report elegant, meaningful and non-messy.
• Report users can choose to dig in to values if they find SparkLines chart more appealing. (E.g. By seeing SparkLine chart, you can quickly determine the fluctuation of values for the listed items rather than reading & analyzing values)
• It’s more suitable to use SparkLine rather than big charts if we need to analyze more items & their values for a time frame. Because SparkLine chart is smaller and smarter version of normal charts 🙂

While working with SSRS reports for displaying some financial data; many a times we have to display data for particular time-frame. Or most commonly – last 12 month’s data.
I am talking about the case where you are pulling data from SSAS Cube using MDX queries. In this particular example, I need to display SSRS report for last 12 month’s data from SSAS Cube. So I need to provide 2 things: StartDate and EndDate.
But as the default expected behavior of the Report requires EndDate to be today’s date so we have to dynamically configure today’s date in EndDate parameter. We also have to determine the date of 12 month’s back to today’s date for StartDate parameter.

As you must have heard or started using DMVs (Dynamic Management View) available in SQL Server to get information about local server operations and server health. But today I would like to focus specially on DMVs for monitoring SSAS (SQL Server Analysis Services) and dig-down to find out how powerful it can be.
DMVs for SSAS are known as “Analysis Services Dynamic Management View“. We can query these views by simple T-SQL SELECT statement. When use these views, they exposes analysis services schema rowsets in form of table, hence information presented will become self-explanatory.

People who have been working with SSRS and Report Builder are well aware about the release of new “Report Builder 3.0“. I have summarized following introduction, features & facts about the product.
General:
If you already know or work with any previous versions of Report Builders then understanding “WHY” is no big deal. So here is a small introduction of new Report Builder 3.0 – This introduces additional visualizations including maps, sparklines, databars, and indicators which can help us producing fantastic reports (layouts based on requirements) so well that can be achieved with standard tables and charts. And as you know that there are “silos of people” who understands only language of reports for their decisions.

What is PowerPivot?
PowerPivot (which is also known as Project “Gemini“) is Microsoft’s hottest business intelligence (BI) innovation. By integrating PowerPivot technology with Microsoft Excel, Excel has gradually becoming most wanted & preferred BI tool (client) in the world.
PowerPivot is actually of 2 types:
1. Client Add-In for Excel 2010 i.e. “PowerPivot for Excel” (Applicable to Excel 2010)
2. Server component i.e. “PowerPivot for SharePoint” (Applicable to SharePoint 2010 Onwards)
