View is not showing newly added column in table

Hi all,
This is for the people who still use “Select * From Table” in their SQL Views. I don’t know what is the reason that you are using this way to create your views, but you could be the victim of this scenario (see… what title says).

Let me show you how you can solve this issue… in-case you come across one.

When this happens??
You make changes in table which is the source of your view. Changes like modifying existing column definition, adding new columns or removing existing columns from table could cause this issue.

Where can I see this issue??
Check the meta-data of your table and view for comparison. (Tip: You can either use traditional method using SYS.OBJECTS joins SYS.COLUMNS or you can check using INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS)

What is the solution?
There are different ways to circumvent this issue.

SSRS Report is asking for Username and Password while executing

Hi all,
I want to bring to your focus a very minor detail which could eat-up your time when it happens.

This is the case when your SSRS report is deployed on ReportServer and you are accessing thru any application or interface e.g. SharePoint. Your SSRS report is using Integrated Security and hence no need to provide Username and Password if you have access to the Report. And everything works fine up to this point.

After some days, if you notice that your SSRS Report is not working as expected and it has started asking for Username and Password while executing it. What could be the reason?

Filtering Feature in SQL Server Management Studio

How are you doing?

I want to draw our attention to pretty handy-dandy (Yet not complete enough) feature in SQL Server Management Studio. That is “Filtering”.

Advantage:
You can filter the objects (like Tables, Views, Stored Procs etc.) based on certain criteria. You can filter them by “Name, Schema, Owner or Creation Date”.

This will be really great help when you have lots of objects in your database. And by filtering you can choose to see only required objects at a time 🙂

Quick-Fix: Report parameter with space in SSRS

Hi guys,
One of the most common practices and a wise recommendation is to display selected report parameter(s) in report … may be in header or body of SSRS report.

It’s a good reference when you export the SSRS report into available formats (Excel, PDF, Word etc.) Because if you don’t include/show selected parameter(s) in exported report then it becomes less-meaningful for a person who is reading/using the report … probably for some decision making.

Check if file exists: using SSIS

Hi All,
Many times, we have to do this simple checking “if file exists/available .. then proceed” in SSIS operations. And Microsoft did not put any facilities to achieve this task in SSIS with default components.

People also have raised this concern to Microsoft, but Microsoft explains that they have more priority works to deal with so this feature is not coming soon. you can check complete story here.

Follow these steps:
1. Create a Boolean variable (I call it a Flag_Variable). Assign default value to “False“.

2. Use “Script Task” to check if file exists in given location. And Set Boolean variable’s value for later use.
(I have used C# for demo.)

Adding a new column to an existing table??? Check the rules first

Hi All,
So, you are standing at the gates where you need to add a new COLUMN to an existing table.

Well, there are 2 cases:

  • Table is empty
  • Table contains data

If “Table is empty” then you are still in design-phase of that table. Add new column whichever the way you know 🙂
E.g. Using T-SQL or through design mode of table etc.

Important Fact: Default Logging in SSIS which store log entries in SQL Server

Few days back I have posted an article on “Default Logging in SSIS“. You can refer that here. In that article I have forgotten to mention a behavior of “enabling a default logging in SSIS package“. Let me show you what you need to know about this fact.

Fact: When you enable a “Default Logging” with SQL Server in SSIS package, it does not create any table (i.e. dbo.sysssislog) or stored proc (i.e. dbo.sp_ssis_addlogentry) at the same time of setting-up in SSIS package. But when you run your package first time, these objects gets created automatically.

Spot/Highlight Minimum and Maximum value(s) in each row in Matrix report in SSRS :)

How are you doing?

Today I would show you; how you can highlight minimum and maximum values in an each row of matrix report in SSRS.

Again, “there are lots of ways“, but that depends on what is your solution framework. If you are using standard T-SQL queries for reporting, then it’s easier to write this min-max logic in query itself.

But if you are using SSAS cube then you have to write custom MDX (i.e. calculated column/”Member” in Cube’s term) and do comparison in SSRS report in each row.

I can show you even simpler way where you don’t have to write MDX to achieve this functionality and implementation will be easier, faster & fun 🙂
