Fastest way to find-out/understand relationships between tables in MS SQL Database

Hi guys,

For most of the BI developers, getting BI related tasks (SSAS, SSIS, SSRS etc.) from multiple teams in company is very common. So in this situation, developer completes a task(s) for one team and goes to another team for different task(s). Once you go to the team for their requirements … lets say for few SSRS reports development or ELT Jobs, you will realize that, they neither have time to give you the proper knowledge transfer nor they could explain the requirements up to the mark how we wanted know in detail. And you have to give the estimate of your work, plan etc.

Well, so the first thing as for a BI developer to know is the database design, team is using and relationships between tables. Here I want to share my 2 favorite ways to find-out the table relationships in database.

Data Mining for Social Moderation – Event @ Microsoft, Singapore on 6th Feb 2012

The BBC (the British Broadcasting Company), a known media force in Europe, implemented an in-database data mining solution for their public-facing website. The BBC encourages users to post comments and become part of their social media community. In this project, the BBC needed a way to improve the social moderation of millions of posts on thousands of forums. This presentation covers how SQL Server helped designing a model to dramatically help improving the quality and efficiency of the moderation. We also discuss cost efficiencies obtained in this project. More and more organizations will need to use enterprise solutions to handle high-volume social networking, learn from it, and eventually take actions that make sense to achieve their goals. Data Mining is one of the areas with more potential growth for SQL Server, and perhaps one of the least known ones by the SQL Server
Professionals.

SSRS Report exported to PDF – Report page is split into multiple pages

Hello guys,
This is very common issue we face in SSRS regarding layout of report. I don’t know what to call this, whether a simple issue or strange requirement of client/user.

Let me tell you the problem definition first.

If we have a SSRS report with many columns to be displayed on it, it will expand horizontally. And after exporting these kinds of reports into PDF file format, you will see that pages have been split in multiple pages. But business users want to see one report page in one single PDF page and not in multiple pages.

Why I call this as strange requirement: Well, think of the scenario when someone asks you to put a table in single A4 size paper with lots of columns in it. And these columns should have proper width; contents of them should be visible etc. I am sure that A4 page would look messy. And even if we use the smaller fonts, we can make that a little less messy.
